Assignment 3 - Location planning

Location Planning:

These following photos are the location we used in order to film our trailer, we chose this location because currently no one is living in it and it is perfectly suited for the theme of our trailer which is horror. The fact that there was a large display of furniture scattered around the ground helped to add effect. We mainly used the downstairs main entrance and the upstairs bedrooms.

The conjuring:

All of the film trailers above have similar features as they all have quick edits with snipers of music matching along with them. In all they have dark sides to all of the locations as they are located in dark gloomy houses which leave you hesitant to ebbed imagine living there. In these three they also have one person as the 'bad guy' as you have the woman in the woman in black and the lady in the conjuring haunting the house as well as the sound man in the house at the end of the street. They all have dark mysterious personalities which match them all up. In general they all have a dark setting and background. The location of the films are also set in a deserted area with the one house far away from the 'real world'. The houses are mainly filmed and seen most commonly during the night time.

Assignment 3 - Film trailer analysis

The Woman In Black- Horror

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1596365/?ref_=nv_sr_1

The Woman in Black is a 2012 British-American supernatural horror film directed by James Watkins and written by Jane Goldman. The film trailer uses various techniques such as, darkness, slow gloomy music, quick edits and scary shots. Its the type of trailer you don't want to dare watch, but its something you can't miss out on. It is based on an old house in the middle of nowhere which contains dark secrets. A writer goes to the house alone and ends up stuck there with the tide. In the trailer there are rapid cut edits with dark music which makes it appeal more to the audience. Throughout the whole film trailer they have used many different variations of lighting, darker lighting occurs the most as the trailers purpose is for the thrill and the dark setting with help to set that mood. The trailer really enhances the mood to the audience as they strongly convey the horror genre to the audience and make us see all that is happening within the movie even though in the movie they are clueless. The slow music that has been put in the with the quick edits create a spooky dark mood to the audience and watching trailers without the soundtrack in the background is not half as scary compared to when there is music. When there have added music in with the quick edits and spooky/ jumpy scenes it really gets the audience interacted and puts them in the scary vibe. The setting of the movie also emphasises the scary side of the movie as it is located by the shore and shows us that the times you can leave depends on the tide arrival. The background setting throughout the movie is constantly foggy making the mood very low and gloomy.

At the very beginning of the film trailer it starts off with leaving people edging for more and to continue watching, the woman at the beginning of the trailer effectively tells the main character not to go to the house he was planning on going to. As soon as we set eyes on the inside of the house we immediately get the impression that it is a very old abandoned and dark house. The effect of the photos and letters that we see that have been left behind by the previous owner shows us how far back this time was and shows the scary aspect of the old photos. The photo that is in zoom throughout the trailer has made a clear effect on the audience and they zoom in towards the house and you can see the silhouette of a woman in the window inside the house which was obviously not noticed by the family. As Daniel Radcliffe  creeps up the stairs slowly with background music adds affect as you are left wanting him to stop continuing up the stair but can't help but watch him proceed. Soon after the first scene This captivates the audience in the perspective that they are left wondering why he was advised not to go. Halfway through the film trailer it shows the upstairs corridor with the dark lighting filming the farthest door in clear shots with all around it being a blur.

Throughout the film trailer there were quick edits along with dark music making the audience wanting to turn down the volume whilst they jump at the quick edits. As you can see in the film trailer they show you scenes with little details that don't reveal much and still manage to keep you interested which will therefore encourage you to go and watch the movie. Other conventions conclude of quick edits following along with the actors names. The start of the trailer also shows the companies involved with the making of the film. The trailer grabs the audiences attention by making them feel more involved. Adding the fast paced edits when the tension is high showing the emotions on the characters faces during different times making it more interesting. The first shot taken shows the audience clearly where the film is set and taking place and due to the camera work we can also see where the tension starts to take place as the audience now knows the surroundings. The shot shows a dark and mysterious atmosphere engaging the audience even further. Its then built up even more when there is a fast sequence of edits which has a changing technique of chime bells. The chime bells add effect as it starts off slow to begin with and then the pace picks up throughout adding tension. The bells then get faster leaving the audience waiting for something to happen.

The dolls portray a disturbing scene as it adds emotion to the audience that they would feel whilst watching this trailer. It shows tension as the doll is staring into the middle of nowhere this creates the atmosphere to show the mystery within the trailer.

Assignment 3 - Film trailer proposal

Audience research conclusions:

In conclusion we have all gathered that for this film trailer we will set in in the abandoned compound the we will have visited many times and we will show the teenagers approaching the compound up the pathway and into the opening of the compound. We will have it decorated as though it has been abandoned for years and will show all of its haunted aspects. As our main character we will have Kate Lochhead playing the main role as the exploring young teenager who wanders upstairs to reveal  the houses darkest secrets. Throughout the trailer we will hold back on how much is revealed as he storyline shouldn't be emphasised too much. All through the trailer we will have a very subtle dark and spooky soundtrack to add affect to all aspects of the trailer. Overall we will have a basic showing of the main outlines of the movie and make it captivating to all age groups watching and make them intrigued to watch more.

Genre:

The genre of this trailer belongs to horror. The conventions we will follow will be the usual weaponry and scenery that would be situated in any horror genre film trailer. We will try to make our trailer unique and unexpected so that it isn't like all other horrors. Throughout the storyboard it is clear that we have gone for a more suspense and thrilled theme.

Content/structure:

The main story of our trailer is that a group of teens adventure through an unknown and unrecognised location. One specific girl takes a burdened interest in the building and starts to venture off into the unseen parts of the house. She leaves her group to do so and ends up alone for the rest of the visit. She starts to see facts and figures that she soon wishes she never saw before. As she walks back down stairs she realises that her friends are no longer in reach of her. Whilst she is downstairs she starts to hear noises and see dark shadowed figures as she attempts to escape. We will show shots of the girl in the kitchen with the male figure behind her with loud and quiet drifts of music. To end the movie trailer we will have a loud slamming bang of the door followed with an immensely loud terrifying scream.  For the name of the movie we have been thinking about calling it 'insomniac' as it gives you the impression that both the audience and the characters will be left sleepless.

Audience:

Our target audience will be roughly 16+ as its too inappropriate for ages younger than that. There is no specific gender that this trailer is aimed at as its for people who are intrigued by horror movies and that simply like to watch this genre. As for interests of course those who don't like horrors will not watch these types of movies. Our trailer is for those who like to watch horror and we will meet those standards, the only way that a watched will not enjoy their experience will be if they are not satisfied by horrors.

Representation:

Our characters will be represented accordingly towards their descriptions. There are certain aspects of the trailer that are stereotypical as the girl will be wearing the white dress costume which is commonly seen in various film trailers. The way in which we have dressed the characters has a sense of meeting stereotypes. As for the weapons they are also commonly situated in horrors as we often see hammers and daggers which are the weapons that we have chosen to use.

Institution:

The film trailer will be distributed shortly before the release of the movie, we will not be releasing anything other than a film trailer accept maybe a poster with the description of the movie alongside with the day of release. Our film trailers will be situated across the social media such as youtube coming up as a link for people to watch.

Narrative:  The story will be showing the teenagers stepping foot into the compound for the first time and wandering around and showing a close up of the girl walking upstairs and exploring into the bedroom with door. We will then show snap shots of her re living the flashback and her coming back into reality after seeing the haunting truths of the past in that house.  We will show a close up of her walking back down the stairs realising that her friends have disappeared and show snippets of the old man standing directly behind her with a white light shining on his face every jump shot.

Voice over: There will be no voice over as we will just be showing their conversation and keep the haunted parts silent for effect we will also have creepy music playing for the majority of the trailer to create that sort of cliffhanger effect as well as suspense.

Mise en scene: The mise en scene is set in an abandoned compound, the props we will use will be dark objects that are spooky e.g. a haunted hammer and dusty unused furniture as well as covered furniture to add the old haunted house effect. All lighting will either be quick glance of light but mainly dark throughout the trailer, this will leave the audience with a doubt to continue watching but not being able to resist.

Location: Our location is set in an abandoned villa in the compound nine pearls, this is a good location that we chose as the villa is right opposite the compound pool which is an area that we are aiming to film in. Inside the villa there is a lot of unused furniture and dust which emphasizes the haunted/ horror effect.

Assignment 2 - Explanation

Music promotion campaign

My target audience is aimed girls who are of the age of 13-25. This is because the lyrics rate to break up therefore it helps to take girls through a heartbreak in order for the to be able to deal with their problems and relate to what is being said in the song. The genre clearly will not appeal to everyone so  the target audience will be for the country style lovers.

In the interview we tried to relate as much as possible the the target audience and speak to their level so that it could be as inspirational as possible. We asked questions on how they got started in the industry so that young girls who aspire to be musicians and after reading the interview will know the pathway to their futures and will give them a lucky head start in their future careers. We asked all the artist individually how they felt at first been in a group rather than solo artist and towards the end asked how they felt about it now and since there is talk on needing more female girl band this may inspire young girls to gather a small group of friends who are talented vocally and come together to form a band.

In my album cover the girls all stood upon the staircase and one of which is holding a guitar in their hands since the guitar is the main instrument used. They all are looking directly into the camera to add affect, as it usually shows the viewer that they are looking directly at them and talking to them. They are all in dark clothing to convey the fact that all songs are about heartbreak. Ask make up has been done darker this also matches the theme.

Keeping the conventions we took multiple shots with the bands standing together so that we could use the best shot for the album cover and a different but similar photo for the magazine spreadsheet. We've kept the colour themes the same colour wise and Kate the guitarist features with her guitar in both.

A few links used include the name of the album as it was mentioned in the interview also the individual styles of the girls and the style of the music lyrics along with it. The reasoning behind the name matches the style of music which is country, the basis behind the name was to express heartbeat which matches the lyrics to every song in the album.

Assignment 2 - Interview

Interview with Vanquish:

Hi girls, Welcome to the show, we are delighted to have you here and are eager to ask you questions on your outstanding X-factor accomplishment and your bright future ahead of you all.

Response: Hello, thank you for having us we are very excited to share wth you all.

Question: Okay so, how did you know that music was the industry that you all wanted to be a part of?

Response: Poppy: Well I remember sitting down on the floor of the lounge with my family sitting in front of the television every Saturday watching my idol Leona Lewis and just saying to my family " Mum and Dad that going to be me up their one day" and here I am today.

Katie: I have always sang since a very young age and have always been told from close friends in family that I can sing and I took recordings after recordings and just fell in love with the whole musical feeling.

Lily: Well to be honest I had never really had the confidence to go up on stage by myself and had always wished to be in a girl group which is why I am very fortunate today. I was always part of a big choir with all girls which is where I can sing more comfortably and confidently in a crowd. But yes I could mot be any happier and luckier to have these amazing girls by my side.

Kate: Myself and my sister used to have a small youtube channel where we would sing medleys of our favourite songs together and upload them. It became quite successful receiving lots of heartwarming and boosting comments which made me captivate the confidence to audition.

Question: And do you ever wish that you could have carried out a solo career instead of as a group?

Response: Poppy: Honestly at first I wasn't too keen on the whole girl group concept and felt a little down when they told me I wasn't strong enough for solo but meeting these girls made me really excited to start a future singing by their sides.

Katie: I honestly was over the moon to be joining a girl group because solo or not I would still living my dream and I couldn't wait to meet them.

Lily: I was over the moon because like I said I would have more confidence with these girls and i prefer more of a group effort than an individual effort, also on tour if we stay in hotels its like a weekly sleepover.

Kate: I liked the idea of just two girls singing and was a little bit disappointed hearing that there were to be four of us being scared that there would be a divide but it is not that way at all and I thought completely wrong.

Questions: So your genre of music is country.... why country?

Response: Well we chose the genre country because it is the style of music that all of us girls love listening to and its a theme we have all listened to since we were yay big. And coincidently we all auditioned singing a country song so getting together and choosing the genre it just became pretty clear that country was the one that we would go for. The reasons why we love this genre is because it allows you to pick any pace of song that you please and you can really add lyrics from the heart and make it a slow song with a twist which hits your emotions harder than a rock song would for example.

Questions: Who has always been you music inspirations?

Response: Poppy: Like I mentioned previously I have always been so inspired by leona lewis and she is just the person I have always aspired to be like. Overtime I step on stage my mind goes to her and she is really the only reason behind me wanting to sing in he fist place.

Katie: My music inspiration is probably Carrie Underwood since she is a female country music idol and she has had an amazing country music career whose songs are popular worldwide and she accomplished all that she has by herself without any aid.

Lily: My idol would have to be taylor swift since she is a woman who is probably looked up to by so many teenagers and even woman who are of middle age audits jus mazing to see how much she has impacted the lives of others so yes my goal is to be looked up to as my as her.

Kate: My answer is going to have to be the same as lily since I agree with everything she has just mentioned and to me I could listen to her songs endlessly and they never age. The way that she writes songs is also just so flawless.

Assignment 2 - Analysis

Fluer East is a singer, songwriter, rapper, dancer and fitness model. She is 29 years old and was born on the 29th of October. In 2005 she entered the X Factor as a girl band 'Addictive Ladies' and later in 2012 she then launched a solo career. She entered the X Factor again in 2014 and came runner up, she was the show's first contestant to to reach number one on the UK iTunes store during her performance of 'Uptown funk'.

Genre:

The genre of Fleur East's new and upbeat song 'Sax', would fall under the category of pop. This is one of the most popular genres as a variety of different audience's listen to this type of music.

Conventions:

The conventions of this album cover would be the link that it has with the genre as well as the style of her music video.  The main focus of this album is the artist Fleur East which is made clear by the fact that she is the main focus of both her album cover and her music video. As you can see she is the only person on her album cover and the type of shot taken is straight on even though she has her body tilted. In her music video she has various other dancers surrounding her but they are mainly in the background throughout and in several quick cuts she is solo. The bright colours in the video can show her inner happiness and same with the dancing.

Production techniques:

Here they use very bright colours for the colour scheme, they haven't used a wide variety of colours they have kept it bold and simplistic, The have used 5 bold colours which really catch your eye and draw you into this album cover. Fleur is clearly seen as she is right in the centre of the album cover as well as the music video which makes her the main focus. There are four costume changes throughout the four minute video. As far as the music video is concerned there are rapid cuts throughout the whole video this makes the video flow a lot more and enable them to change her costumes effortlessly and almost magically. The constant cuts the this video are very sharp and persistent and are needed almost every single second due to the amount of colour changes in the background and outfit changes.

Target audience:

The target audience for Fleur East's new album could be of all ages, there are no age limits on musical genres. This album would attract all ages and all genders. For gender it would fall towards female slightly more than male but it is still an upbeat and funky song that is enjoyable for any type of audience. Even though I feel as if this is mainly for females there are also some male dancers in the background which could imply that men also enjoy this song. Since the album cover is very bright and vibrant this will be very appealing towards the target audience, it is very intriguing and eye-catching therefore if this were to be on the shelf of a music store for example this would be one of the first to be looked at. The way in which they have presented Fleur East and the album cover in general it gives the audience a taste of what they will potentially purchase.

How the artist is represented:

The way in which she holds herself shows a sense of power and strong personality as well as being upbeat. I feel that the font of the text really stands out as it is bold and very clear. Fleur is definitely the main focus in the album cover as she is directly in the centre of it so she is the main attraction. It helps with recognition on who the album belongs to. Coming back to the font and her name is at the very top and the name of the song it in big block letters right across the cover so it is not hard to get an idea of the song name. It has a modern approach to the design and it new and in. The font is also unique as there doesn't and seem to many others that look quite like this. As for the colours it matches the music video which is her dancing and singing along to the soundtrack. In the video there is also bright colours so it goes along with the album cover. She is also wearing a casual yet slightly dressy outfit which are very bright colour wise, this goes for all of her outfits as they change rather frequently. The fact that she is wearing this may inspire viewers and potential fans to desire this look and eventually start to dress this way.

Synergy: The main source of synergy would be her of course and the bright colours that evidently stick out the most. Her costumes remain casual yet dressy and hip and the same time. Her positioning also implies that she is dancing which she is in the music video so I feel that this is the main synergy technique used.

I feel as though the colour yellow used for the background brings her out much clearer and makes her appear more sharp and it makes her the 'it girl'. Her hair is dishevelled and messy, perhaps this is because she has been dancing as shown in her music video. Through presenting this on the album cover it can show the viewer what they should be expecting the song to represent.

Conclusion:

In conclusion I think that they have impacted the audience really well through the techniques used and their ability to captivate the target audience. I think that the video was very uplifting and vibrant and made you feel as though you wanted to get up and take part in the dancing and the album cover is very eye-catching and is the first album you would think to look at and purchase.
